Life | Detox Diary, Day One

Hi everyone! Happy New Year!!!

I hope you all had a fantastic time over the break? I was ill with a chest infection so didn't do too much but it was still really lovely just to have some time off.

We were supposed to be working on "Project Kitchen" in the house. There are walls to be painted, cupboard fronts to be primed and painted, worktops and new hardware to be fitted.....the list goes on! Aaaaand basically because I was poorly we did zip, nada, nothing - which will make this weekend hard work!

Anyway, after that wordy and off-topic related intro, I'm here to talk Detox.

My good friend Fiona Campbell is running a 21 Day Detox in January - I've jumped on the band-wagon as I could definitely feel better after a Christmas of eating a lot and moving less.

The actual "detox" itself is 14 days. The first week was for prep e.g. Buying all your ingredients and supplements, reading through the recipes and meal planner etc.

I started yesterday! I have a work-do on the 17th Jan which I want to be finished detoxing by.

I thought it might be fun/interesting for you guys to see what this detox looks like? And it's like an online food diary for me so will hold me accountable!

Oh and Dan has decided to do this with me! So if you see two lots of everything in the pictures that's why!

So here goes Day 1 (Friday 3rd Jan):

7.00 am - Wake-up. Hot water and lemon.

7.30 am - Oatmeal porridge with blueberries, cinnamon and agave nectar.

To be honest this didn't taste the best! The porridge was made with water and resembled that Oliver Twist style "gruel" or in Dan's words "that is definitely something we could hang wallpaper with up at the house"....! It didn't taste bad but wasn't particularly appetising either. Luckily there are quite a few other breakfast options on the detox.

11.00 am - Green Tea and Coconut Macademia Bounce Ball

I'm definitely a morning eater! I wake up so hungry and could easily eat two breakfasts (and sometimes do), my appetite trails off as the day goes on.

Ideally during detox you shouldn't snack to give your digestive system a break in-between meals. I suffer from low-blood sugar though so if I get hungry, pretty soon after I feel sick and dizzy. For me it's better to have a small, nutritious snack so I either have a Bounce Ball which is super yummy, or a piece of fruit with a handful of nuts. This sorts out my blood sugar and keeps me on track.

I didn't have time to prepare anything for lunch today so I grabbed one of these when I stopped at the motorway services.

Dan had an Innocent Mexican Chilli Veg Pot with a side salad of leaves, cherry tomatoes and 1/2 avocado.

I love this tea! It's like a hug in a cup, so lovely and warming. Herbal tea and up to 2 cups of green tea are allowed as part of the detox.

6.30pm Carrot Sticks and Hoummos

We both came home from work absolutely starving!! We shared a carrot and had about a tablespoon of hoummos each whilst I prepped and cooked dinner.

7.15pm Vodka (Single shot/25ml) with Soda Water and Fresh Lime

I know what you're thinking....! "You're drinking alcohol on a detox?!" In Week One the detox says it's ok to have a small glass of wine (once a day on up to 4 of the 7 days). We didn't want to open a bottle to end up wasting it, so we went with a single shot vodka option instead. We had it in tall glasses with lots of sparkling mineral water and freshly squeezed lime. It was a really refreshing and a nice little nod to "Friday Night".

7.30pm Chicken Thai Green Curry with a 1/4 cup Brown Rice

The detox recipe is really fresh and tasty! You make the Thai Green Curry Paste from scratch so there's no hidden nasties or preservatives. Our tummies felt nicely full and content after dinner.

8.00pm We settled onto the the sofa to relax and watch a couple of episodes of Breaking Bad (we're on the final season, totally hooked!). I'm currently selling a load of stuff on ebay so caught up on some buyer questions and packed up some items ready to go.

10.30pm Off to bed. This is later than the detox plan suggests. But it is a Friday night and we can catch-up on some zzzz's tomorrow morning.

Throughout the day we both had lots of water to drink. Dan went one better better than me and had "cucumber water" at work, he drank 4 large glasses throughout the day. He also had two cups of green tea.

I filled my trusty BPA free Thermos twice and got though the lot(it holds 700ml) - this is on top of the other tea I had above.

Drinking enough water is a really important part of detox, it helps to flush any toxins out of your body and keeps you nice and hydrated.

And that's it for Day One! Are you guys doing anything to up those health-stakes in January?! Hitting the gym, or a detox?
