Life | Detox Diary Day 14

On Day 14 I headed up to Manchester for a big work conference.....tricky, tricky!

DISCLAIMER - This day is 100% NOT Approved. It is less than ideal and would not make up a typical day on the official 21 Day Detox.

I made the decision ahead of time that I would be as healthy as possible for the duration but wasn't going to try and keep Almond Milk chilled for 3 days! I was also just about to enter the final phase of the detox which is about Maintenance and incorporating what you've learned on the Detox back into everyday life, so it's less "Smoothie" heavy.

Being away and making healthy choices isn't actually as difficult as I thought it would be. The only real problem came at dinner-time when we had a pre-ordered set menu in a Thai Restaurant.....read on to find out more!

06.00 am - Hot Water with Lemon.

07.00 am - Berry Smoothie with Detox Powder.

10.00 am - Almond Bounce Ball with Teapigs Green Tea.

12.00 pm - Lunch at the conference. The food at the meeting was lovely! Available at lunch there was Paella, Chorizo Sausages, Burgers and a big table full of Antipasti and cheeses. I managed to avoid all that...and here's what I had.

Vegetable Paella (I only had about a handful or two tablespoons) of this, with Smoked Mackerel Fillets, Gravadlax, Tomato Salad (I snuck a little piece of mozzarella on there) and a sort of Grilled Aubergine Ratatouille.

16.00 pm - I had an Apple with a few Macademia Nuts.

18.00 pm - Single shot Vodka with Soda and Fresh Lime. OMG, after over two weeks of no alcohol this went straight to my head! I felt absolutely hammered after just one drink!

20.00 pm - Dinner at Chaophraya in Manchester. The food was amazing and as I mentioned above all pre-ordered! I decided to just go with the flow. For starters they bought out King Prawn Toasts, Chicken Satay Skewers, Steamed Crab and Prawn Dumplings, Ribs and Honey Pork. I had a Chicken Skewer with no Satay Sauce (luckily it was in a pot on the side), a forkful of the Pork and a Dumpling.

Mains were a selection of Curries, Beef in Black Pepper, Prawns with Ginger, a Fruity Duck Curry and Pork Belly with Thai Basil. I had a spoonful of each and tried to grab as much of the veg as possible!

Whilst everyone else plowed into the free flowing wine throughout dinner, I had two more single shot vodka with soda and fresh lime, and LOTS of water to try and dilute the effects of the alcohol!

Luckily I had an accomplice who wasn't keen on a big night and we snuck off to grab a taxi back to our hotel at about 10 pm.

22.30 pm - Bed!

Life | Detox Diary Days 12 & 13

I'm not going to lie Week Two got a little boring to blog about....and if it's boring for me to write about it's sure as hell not going to be interesting for you to read about!

So I'll quickly run through Days 12 and 13 and then do a little update on my Detox Progress! Spoiler Alert - this Detox works!

Day 12

07.00 am - Hot Water and Lemon

07.30 am - Berry Smoothie made with Liver Detox Powder

11.00 am - Bounce Ball and Green Tea

13.30 pm - Smoothie blended on-the-go

16.30 pm - Apple with a few Pecan Nuts

19.30 pm - Leftover Thai Green Curry with Steamed Kale and Long Stem Broccoli

 Day 13

As Day 12 except for Dinner I made some Thai Inspired Salmon "En Papillote".

This is a super quick, healthy and tasty way to cook fish. You basically wrap your little fishy up in a parcel with some yummy flavours and pop it in the oven. 15 - 20 minutes later (depending on size) your tasty little fish is ready!

I switch the flavour combination for this up all the time but I had a quite a few ingredients leftover from making the Thai Green Curry earlier in the week so I decided to just use what I had to hand which was:

- 1 Clove of Garlic (crushed)
- Fresh Ginger (grated)
- 1/2 Red Chilli (de-seeded and sliced)
- Fresh Coriander (roughly chopped)
- Little squeeze of Agave Nectar
- Juice from a lime

Pop your salmon on a big piece of tin foil and then scatter the above ingredients over. Wrap up your parcel leaving as much "air" as possible around your fish to allow it to steam. And then you place in a pre-heated 180 degree oven for 15-20 minutes.

We had ours with a Baby Spinach and Tomato Salad but you could put anything leafy green alongside this for a delicious dinner!

The juices from the fish are so good make sure to use them!

On the morning of Day 13 I weighed myself and took my waist measurement for a little progress update and the results were amazing!

10lbs down and 2" off my waist in 12 days....crazy! And the great thing about the detox isn't just about the visual results. I feel so full of energy! I don't ever get a mid-afternoon lull and have enough energy in the tank until bed-time. I have a lovely flat tummy that doesn't bloat and although I generally have a very sunny outlook on life, I do feel incredibly positive.

I have just over a week left on the detox so I'll do a full round up at the end but thought I would give you some just over mid-way results, I couldn't be happier!

Life | Detox Diary Day Ten

On Day Ten I hit a wall....metaphorically speaking of course.

I didn't sleep well the night before......something to do with getting woken up by a drunk boy at 4 am (ahem Daniel). And then I woke up to a massive list of things to do and just basically wanted to cry....but I didn't. DB (that's Drunken Boy not Dear Boyfriend nor Dan Bernard) made me a Berry Shake and then we headed off to Sainsbury's to get supplies. I should have taken a picture of the trolley, you've never seen so much green stuff!

09.00 am - Hot Water and Lemon

10.00 am -  Berry Smoothie

12.30 pm - Almond Bounce Ball

14.30 pm - Berry Smoothie

17.30 pm - Teapigs Chai Tea with a splash of Almond Milk. This is my favourite Detox Treat, it tastes really spicy, and is so warming and comforting.

18.00 pm - I took myself off for a little Epsom Salt Bath Exorcism, I was feeling so tired and grumpy by this point.

19.00 pm - We had Thai Green Curry (detox recipe) just like Day One, except for this time we had it with Steamed Kale and Pak Choi instead of Brown Rice.

The thing I have struggled most with in Week Two is hunger, and hungry Ali is not a happy Ali. I've made this Super Mood Kale Salad (Detox Recipe) to have ready as a snack. It's so yummy, it definitely helped to put a smile back on my face.

20.00 pm - We watched the last ever episode of Breaking Bad...sob! I can't decide whether I like the ending or not. Either way it was a great show. Now we need a new one to get into....any suggestions? What's good?

22.00 pm -  Bed.

Life | Detox Diary Day Nine

Oh sweet, sweet Saturday, how I love you. And this one was no exception, a beautiful sunny day in Bristol, a hair appointment and shopping after.....aaaand squeezing in a little detox in-between it all!

08.30 am - Hot Water with Lemon. I actually woke up at around 5am with a headache but had a glass of water and managed to get back to sleep for a couple of hours.

09.00 am - Apple Smoothie. I tried this one with water instead of Almond Milk....big no, no! Almond Milk all the way when it comes to these Smoothies.

12.00 pm - At Maximum FX getting my mane sorted, I snacked on an Almond Bounce Ball and some Green Tea.

14.30 pm - Dan made me my lunchtime Berry Smoothie. He's found a really good way to make it taste less grainy for me. He adds the powder to a shaker with some warm water, gives it a vigorous shake and then adds it to the rest of the Smoothie Ingredients and then blends. It's sooo much better! Just a little note on this....I'm really weird about "food texture" for example I love the taste of pears but hate the texture, so others might not have a problem with the powder!

18.00 pm - When I got back from shopping I was ravenous! I had 2 tablespoons of natural yogurt with half a chopped apple and some pistachio's.

21.30 pm - We went out to dinner at Al Bacio in the evening. It was crazy busy in there and it took quite a while for our food to arrive.

I managed to resist all the anti-pasti, garlic bread, calamari, pizza.... I say this lightly on reflection but I literally nearly cried when they bought out pizza....my favourite food on the planet.

To distract me from a table full of people eating delicious food I took some pictures of them.....

.....And then my dinner arrived, a Whole Grilled Seabass with a Side Salad. As pretty as this little fella was I asked the guys at Al Bacio to fillet it for me, I love fish but this seemed like way too much work when I was so hungry!

Mmmmm, fries (in the background)....I didn't have any, sob!

It was absolutely delicious and there was so much of it I couldn't actually finish it. I can't wait to go back and try some more of the menu, everyone's food looked so good.

12.00 am - I had stuck on water all night so whilst the others went out to party, I went home to bed! I definitely feel more tired this week than last week.

Life | Detox Diary Day Eight

As I mentioned yesterday, Week Two of the Detox is all about the Liver.

"What's so great about your Liver?" I hear you ask. In true Chandler Bing style I think we should reverse that question to "What is not so great about your Liver?" And the answer would be - "Nothing". In terms of overall health, your Liver is the one to look after.

I found the passage below here.

It explains the importance of your Liver far more eloquently than I can.

"Your liver is your largest internal organ, and it’s responsible for an astonishing variety of life-sustaining and health-promoting tasks – including those that make healthy weight loss and weight management possible. Integral to countless metabolic processes, the liver supports the digestive system, controls blood sugar and regulates fat storage. It stores and mobilizes energy, and produces more proteins than any other organ in the body. It also regulates your blood flow and, if you’re a woman, keeps your menstrual cycles running smoothly.
One of your liver’s most important functions, though – and the one most crucial to your weight loss – is chemically breaking down everything that enters your body, from the healthiest bite of organic food to the poisonous pesticides that linger on your salad; from the purest filtered water to a glass of wine or a cup of coffee; from your daily vitamin and mineral supplements to your doctor-prescribed blood-pressure medication.
It’s your liver’s job to distinguish between the nutrients you need to absorb and the dangerous or unnecessary substances that must be filtered out of your bloodstream. But when the liver is clogged and overwhelmed with toxins, it can’t do a very effective job of processing nutrients and fats. So if you’re concerned with managing your weight, remember this important point: The more toxic your body becomes, the more difficulty you’ll have losing weight and keeping it off. "
So you see where I'm coming from? Detoxing that bad boy is pretty darn important.

For Week Two of Fi's Detox Plan I will be having a special powder mix blended into a smoothie to help support the liver. Throughout the entire Detox I have also been taking supplements specifically designed for what my body needs to support this process. I won't mention what they are, because everyone's needs are different.

Here's how Day Eight turned out.

07.00 am Hot Water and Lemon

07.30 am Berry Smoothie. I'm not going to lie, the detox powder doesn't make the smoothie taste bad but it does give it a really gritty texture. I'm going to have to work on that one!

11.30 am Teapigs Green Tea and Coconut Macademia Bounce Ball

13.45 pm I was working from home and decided to experiment a bit with the powder for lunch. I've long been a fan of the Tone It Up girls' Protein Pancake and though I would use this powder to try and re-create them!

It doesn't look the best but actually tasted great! I added some fresh cherries into the mix too.

19.30 pm After a good couple of hours stressing out about my new phone I got around to making dinner. We had Lemon Lentil Soup with Kale (a Detox recipe), like all the recipes this was really filling and tasty.

23.00 pm More freaking out about my phone, and an episode of Breaking Bad later. I headed to bed.

Life | Detox Diary Day Seven

Week One is done, woop!

My celebration is fairly short lived though as I think Week Two is going to be a lot harder. This week we're replacing Breakfast (and maybe Lunch too) with a meal replacement smoothie to help detoxify the liver, eeeek!

Anyway, here's Day Seven for ya.

06.30 am - Hot Water with Lemon

07.00 am - Breakfast. I had Granola with Fresh Cherries and Unsweetened Almond Milk. As always, this was really tasty.

11.00 am - Almond Bounce Ball and a TeaPigs Chai Tea.

13.45 pm - Lunch-on-the-go! I had Hearty Winter Stew (a Detox recipe); it mainly consists of vegetables and beans. I went a bit OTT on the chilli when I was making it so it definitely had a bit of a kick! I'm really enjoying having something warm to eat at lunchtime, usually I'm not organised enough to plan ahead and heat my food in the morning to keep in the Thermos. This detox has forced me to do it, and I love it. Good for the old wallet too!

19.30 pm - For dinner we had Butternut Dahl (Detox recipe) with a Spinach, Cherry Tomato and Pine Nut Salad. The dressing was Lemon and Olive Oil. This was as yummy as the first time I ate it!

20.30 pm - Bath time! I added some Epsom Salts, it's so relaxing and good for the muscle aches and pains I've got from working on the house.

22.00 pm - Bed.

If you've enjoyed reading about Fi's Detox Plan please head to Facebook and give her page a thumbs-up! You can find more info on the Detox there too.

If you would like to know when I have a new Blog Post up (or just my general ramblings!) please like IttyBittyBristol's Facebook Page.

How are you guys doing? Any New Years Resolutions on the go?

Life | Detox Diary Day 5

Phew! I could not have picked a worse week to detox!

Work is incredibly busy, and there's lots of stuff going on with the house - I feel like I'm running from one thing to the next and not "taking time for me", which is kind of the point of detox. The bit I'm struggling with isn't the food or lack of sugar, caffeine, or alcohol - it's the preparation! Thinking ahead for every meal of the day is actually pretty challenging for me.

That being said - the challenge is paying off. I can feel my energy levels are beginning to rise and I've lost an inch from my waist already!

Here's how Day 5 turned out.

07.00 am  Hot Water & Lemon

07.30 am I tried the Oatbran for Breakfast again. After Day 1, Dan is steering well clear but I thought I would give it another go. This time I made it with half almond milk and half water and it was so much better!

13.30 pm For lunch I had the Innocent Indian Vegetable Masala Veg Pot. I heated it in the morning and then popped it in my Thermos for lunch. For work, I'm in and out of hospitals all day and don't have access to a fridge or microwave - which means I have to get creative with a Thermos or a cool bag!

15.00 pm Vanilla and Roiboos Tea

18.00 pm An apple and a few pecans. This apple tasted so deliciously sweet! One thing I have noticed on the detox is that my sense of taste has definitely increased.

19.45 pm Dinner! We had "Healthy Roast Chicken" (a detox recipe) with Sweet Potato Wedges and Steamed Kale. Both of us enjoyed this so much!

21.00 pm Time for a little chill! I've never had a bath with Epsom Salts before, and was slightly sceptical as to whether I would notice any difference but they truly are very relaxing. They're great for soothing any muscle aches and pains (I've been hefting tiles around the house so my back is sore), and they definitely help to ease stress and calm those energy levels. I'm a convert!

22.00 pm Bed!

Life | Detox Diary Day 4

Hi everyone!

As most of you already know I'm on a detox plan, and you guys can follow the highs and lows right here. Days 1, 2 and 3 are already up, you can find them in the menu bar on the right-hand side.

Day 4 was a bit of a challenge. I had a crazy, busy day at work and then we had plans in the evening to go to the cinema. Cinema?! Yes, the place where they sell an infinite number of sweet and sugary snacks..... This was incredibly painful when you have a massive post-dinner sugar craving. We were really good though and didn't touch a thing! The movie on the other hand, not so good. I really liked Anchorman 1 so I don't know why I didn't like 2....the boys were laughing their heads off. For me it just felt too contrived.

Anyway, enough of the film review. Here's what happened on Day 4!

7.00 am Hot Water and Lemon

7.15 am Dan made me Breakfast! We had Granola with Natural Yogurt and Strawberries.

7.30 am I prepped my lunch. I heated up some Butternut Dahl (one of the Detox recipes I made the night before) and put it into a Thermos.

14.00 pm Lunch! I was starving. I ended up having a really busy morning so didn't have time to stop any earlier. Luckily when I opened up my Thermos the Butternut Dahl was still warm. The flavours are very aromatic, and the blend of spices is really tasty. A massive bonus for me at this point was that it's really filling! Lentils are so good for that.

18.45 pm For dinner I cooked Seabass Fillets En-Papillote, (this sounds way posher than it is - you just make a little pouch out of tin foil for your fish to steam in and pop it in the oven) with fresh Lemon and Italian Herbs. We had Roasted Veg on the side. It was really fresh and yummy. This was an adaptation of one of the detox recipes. A couple of them feature Fennel and I literally can't stand the stuff! Anything remotely liquorice or aniseed makes me gag.

19.30 pm Cinema. At this point I had a massive sugar-craving and was salivating about "just a few chocolate raisins.....". Before I devoured the entire pic-n-mix counter, I quickly headed off to Costa for a herbal tea! I got Gingersnap and Peach - it was really good and quietened my inner sugar monster.

22.15 pm When we got home Dan and I were both starving! There was absolutely no way we could sleep with such grumbly tummy's so I made us a small snack. We had 2 tablespoons of Natural Yogurt, approx. 25g of Pistachio's (a quarter of a 100g pack) and a teaspoon of Agave Nectar. I cannot even explain how good this tasted! We both savoured every last mouthful. This isn't on the detox plan....I'll get Fi's thoughts and come back to you! Oh and I forgot to photograph it, I was THAT hungry!

 23.00 pm Bed!

Life | Detox Diary Day 3

Hi everyone!

Today was such a busy day. There's so much going on at the moment, even Sunday's have "to-do" lists, grrr.

We had the first viewing of Dan's flat tonight, which means....OMG, we're actually going to move into the house! Not until the end of January, but we've set a date and we're sticking to it, gulp.

I didn't end up going to sleep last night until about midnight and then was awoken by a drunken boy (don't worry it was Dan) at around 3am so decided to have a little lie-in this morning. For those of you that read Day 1 - yep, Dan is on the Detox with me but it was a good friend's Birthday. Apparently he only drank vodka with soda and fresh lime all night but I think when you have about 10 of them it might defeat the point of detox! Even so, he's doing really well at sticking to all the food stuff and is pretty much eating the same as me.

Anyway, here's what happened on Day 3 of the Detox!

10.00 am - Hot Water and Lemon

10.30 am - Granola with Natural Yogurt and Blueberries. This tasted amazing! And substantial. I woke up starving so the granola did a good job of filling me up.

14.00 pm - For lunch I had an Innocent Mexican Sweet Potato Chilli Veg Pot. These things are great. Super quick to prepare, and nutritious. Usually fast food and nutrition don't go hand-in-hand but these totally hit the spot. The chilli one tastes yummy too.

15.00 pm - Vanilla and Roiboos Tea

19.00 pm - For dinner I kind of "tweaked" the plan. It was supposed to be "Fish & Roasted Veg" but we had Tuna Steaks with Nigel Slater's Salsa Verde and steamed Broccoli, Leeks and Courgettes on the side. It was d-lish.

I also drank a lot of fresh water with fresh lime juice throughout the day.

In terms of overall well-being I've felt pretty good today. No headache's or crazy thirst. And I've felt less hungry so I've not had any snacks (unlike Day's 1 and 2).

Good times people. Wish me luck as head in to next week, I need to get super-organised!

Life | Detox Diary Day Two

Hi everyone! I'm back with the Detox Diary Day Two (Saturday 4th Jan).

Here's how it all went down, if you'll excuse the pun.

09.00 am - Wake Up. Hot water with lemon.

10.30 am - Breakfast! An egg white omelette with spring onions, tomatoes, mushrooms and spinach. I also had a 1/4 avocado on the side.

11.00 am - Vanilla and Roiboos Tea

12.30 pm - I was heading off to my Godson's 1st Birthday Party and desperately needed a snack as I was rushing out the door. I had an Almond Bounce Ball.

14.30 pm - For lunch I went off-plan! I had some ratatouille left over from before I started the detox. You guys know I have a real issue with waste (literally I have OCD about it), so I wanted to finish it up.

I had a grilled chicken breast with the ratatouille and some watercress, rocket and spinach salad on the side. It was sooo good!

15.00 pm - I met my friend Mel at Spicer + Cole and had a Jasmine Pearl Green Tea. It was delicious, but then I love green tea so I might be biased!

17.00 pm - I was hungry again! I had this Almond & Cranberry Snack Pot tucked away in my bag so munched on this.

21.00 pm - I had dinner way too late today. The detox plan recommends eating your last meal before 7pm, oops. I was running around and went to see my Dad, time just flew. When I finally got home I quickly steamed some Tenderstem Broccoli and heated up a portion of leftover Thai Green Curry. I added some baby spinach leaves to the mix and voila! Within 10 minutes dinner was ready.

I've also drunk a lot of cucumber water today, it's so much more refreshing than plain water!

In terms of how I felt today....

- Hungry! I don't know what was wrong with me but I was basically just peckish all day. Although I ate well I never felt satisfied.

- I also experienced a couple of mild headache's. This is to be expected with a Detox.

- Thirsty. In an insatiable way, my mouth has felt really dry and fluffy all day, eeuuuuuggghhhh.

- Tired. I can't wait to sleep tonight.

23.00 pm Bed Time. Zzzzz.

Life | Detox Diary, Day One

Hi everyone! Happy New Year!!!

I hope you all had a fantastic time over the break? I was ill with a chest infection so didn't do too much but it was still really lovely just to have some time off.

We were supposed to be working on "Project Kitchen" in the house. There are walls to be painted, cupboard fronts to be primed and painted, worktops and new hardware to be fitted.....the list goes on! Aaaaand basically because I was poorly we did zip, nada, nothing - which will make this weekend hard work!

Anyway, after that wordy and off-topic related intro, I'm here to talk Detox.

My good friend Fiona Campbell is running a 21 Day Detox in January - I've jumped on the band-wagon as I could definitely feel better after a Christmas of eating a lot and moving less.

The actual "detox" itself is 14 days. The first week was for prep e.g. Buying all your ingredients and supplements, reading through the recipes and meal planner etc.

I started yesterday! I have a work-do on the 17th Jan which I want to be finished detoxing by.

I thought it might be fun/interesting for you guys to see what this detox looks like? And it's like an online food diary for me so will hold me accountable!

Oh and Dan has decided to do this with me! So if you see two lots of everything in the pictures that's why!

So here goes Day 1 (Friday 3rd Jan):

7.00 am - Wake-up. Hot water and lemon.

7.30 am - Oatmeal porridge with blueberries, cinnamon and agave nectar.

To be honest this didn't taste the best! The porridge was made with water and resembled that Oliver Twist style "gruel" or in Dan's words "that is definitely something we could hang wallpaper with up at the house"....! It didn't taste bad but wasn't particularly appetising either. Luckily there are quite a few other breakfast options on the detox.

11.00 am - Green Tea and Coconut Macademia Bounce Ball

I'm definitely a morning eater! I wake up so hungry and could easily eat two breakfasts (and sometimes do), my appetite trails off as the day goes on.

Ideally during detox you shouldn't snack to give your digestive system a break in-between meals. I suffer from low-blood sugar though so if I get hungry, pretty soon after I feel sick and dizzy. For me it's better to have a small, nutritious snack so I either have a Bounce Ball which is super yummy, or a piece of fruit with a handful of nuts. This sorts out my blood sugar and keeps me on track.

I didn't have time to prepare anything for lunch today so I grabbed one of these when I stopped at the motorway services.

Dan had an Innocent Mexican Chilli Veg Pot with a side salad of leaves, cherry tomatoes and 1/2 avocado.

I love this tea! It's like a hug in a cup, so lovely and warming. Herbal tea and up to 2 cups of green tea are allowed as part of the detox.

6.30pm Carrot Sticks and Hoummos

We both came home from work absolutely starving!! We shared a carrot and had about a tablespoon of hoummos each whilst I prepped and cooked dinner.

7.15pm Vodka (Single shot/25ml) with Soda Water and Fresh Lime

I know what you're thinking....! "You're drinking alcohol on a detox?!" In Week One the detox says it's ok to have a small glass of wine (once a day on up to 4 of the 7 days). We didn't want to open a bottle to end up wasting it, so we went with a single shot vodka option instead. We had it in tall glasses with lots of sparkling mineral water and freshly squeezed lime. It was a really refreshing and a nice little nod to "Friday Night".

7.30pm Chicken Thai Green Curry with a 1/4 cup Brown Rice

The detox recipe is really fresh and tasty! You make the Thai Green Curry Paste from scratch so there's no hidden nasties or preservatives. Our tummies felt nicely full and content after dinner.

8.00pm We settled onto the the sofa to relax and watch a couple of episodes of Breaking Bad (we're on the final season, totally hooked!). I'm currently selling a load of stuff on ebay so caught up on some buyer questions and packed up some items ready to go.

10.30pm Off to bed. This is later than the detox plan suggests. But it is a Friday night and we can catch-up on some zzzz's tomorrow morning.

Throughout the day we both had lots of water to drink. Dan went one better better than me and had "cucumber water" at work, he drank 4 large glasses throughout the day. He also had two cups of green tea.

I filled my trusty BPA free Thermos twice and got though the lot(it holds 700ml) - this is on top of the other tea I had above.

Drinking enough water is a really important part of detox, it helps to flush any toxins out of your body and keeps you nice and hydrated.

And that's it for Day One! Are you guys doing anything to up those health-stakes in January?! Hitting the gym, or a detox?

If you're interested in finding out more about the detox you can check out Fi's website or her Facebook Page
