Poolside Pretty

I've been mulling over for a few weeks now what make-up I want to wear poolside. I don't want anything heavy or to look "done-up". But I do want to make the most of my features and not feel like I may scare small children with my naked face.

I picked up these from Boots today:

1. Rimmel London, Glam Eyes Waterproof Mascara in Black (£7.19)
2. Bourjois Paris, 3D Effect Waterproof Gloss (SPF15) in Rose Pacific (£6.99)
3. No7, Stay Perfect Eye Mousse in Vanilla (£9)
4. Rimmel London, Exaggerate Waterproof Eye Definer in Black (£3.99)

I've never tried any of these products before so I'll take a poolside pic and let you know how I get on!

The Coral Obsession Continues.....

Have you noticed that pastel colours are EVERYWHERE this spring?! This is absolutely fine with me as one of my all-time favourite colours is Coral. I picked up this new nail polish the other day and am in love. Bright, fresh & fun, what's not to like?

Colour: 415, Instyle Coral
(Please excuse my cuticles, yikes!)

Holiday Prep!

I'm not sure if I've mentioned it yet but I'm going on holiday this week! Obviously I'm very excited by the prospect of a week in the sunshine but this also brings with it a teensy bit of anxiety, I'll be spending most of my holiday in little more than a bikini, eek!!

Most of the womens' magazines out there at the moment will have a feature on how to get "bikini-ready". All very well and good if you have a month and the will-power of a rhino, neither of which are currently in my possession. I have 3 days, and zero will-power when it comes to food. With that in mind, here's how I prepare myself for such an occasion.

Rule Number One - and this is the most important one. I accept that I am not going to look like Gisele, Elle or Heidi for this holiday, nor am I going to be able to significantly change my body shape. I want to arrive on my holiday ready to relax and have fun, not light-headed because I haven't eaten carbs for a month and have spent my life in the gym.

Rule Number Two - Make the most of what you have got. For me this is about having soft, glowing skin that's not super-pale so when you strip off pool side you may actually blind someone. And pretty toes! Sounds silly but this is one thing that EVERYONE can achieve!

So what do I do?

First of all, use some of these beauties in the shower daily. These are exfoliating gloves and can be bought virtually everywhere that would sell shower gel.  A simple way to smooth, soft skin.

In the morning after my shower I slather on this stuff:

Slimwear by Soap & Glory. It's a body balm that reduces "puff" and "orange peel" effect. I really like it. I've tried more expensive brands before but this totally seems to tighten everything up and leaves my skin feeling refreshed and toned.

And then in the evening, 10 minutes or so before bed, some St. Tropez Everyday Body Moisturiser (Light-Medium).

The reason I do this before bed is two-fold:

1. I generally don't have time to wait around in the morning for lotions to "sink-in"
2. For some reason, all moisturisers with an element of fake-tan smell really "biscuity" on my skin. I've tried so many brands over the years but they all do it. I love St. Tropez for the colour it gives my skin. Just warm and naturally tanned. Putting this on before bed means I can wash the smell off in the morning but keep my tanned skin, perfecto!

On to your tootsies. I swear by the products in the pic below to transform my feet and make them look pretty.

1. Ped-Egg. Great for getting rid of dead-skin. You use this "dry", so no doubling over in the shower with a pumice!
2. L'Occitane En Provence Shea Butter Foot Cream. Pop this on whenever you can, watching TV, at night, whenever. It will make your feet seriously soft.
3. Pretty Nail Polish. This one is "Show-Off" by Rimmel, London. But any pinky/coral/red polish will look lovely on your toes.

And, that's it. There's nothing left to do, except have a fabulous time and feel confident with what I've got.

What's your pre-holiday beauty regime like?

P.S. I am not affiliated with any of the brands above in any way. These recommendations are made purely on my own experience and opinion.

Happy Friday!!

I follow quite a few blogs from US based writers and often on a Friday they do a "High-five for Friday!!!" post. Whilst my inner Brit is slightly scared by the American over-enthusiasm, I do really like this idea. Friday is always one of the best days of the week, right? So here's what rocked my world this week.

1. The 4-day working week, a thing of great beauty. Enough said. 4 is my new favourite number.

2. Seeing my Brother and Dad for dinner on Tuesday night at Aqua, Bristol. Always a pleasure to spend time with my family.

3. Finally getting around to making something from canyoustayfordinner.com blog. Andie (the writer) is refreshingly honest, witty and fun when it comes to anything food (and life) related. I made her Thai Tofu Salad with Peanut Dressing, changed the Tofu for Chicken (can't stand the stuff) and it was quite literally heaven on a plate! Can't wait to try out more of her recipes.

4. This time next week I will be sunning myself in Egypt, yippee!! Cannot wait to just chill in the sun with my bestie, Fi.

5. Meet Schweppes. It was bed-linen changing day this morning. Went back upstairs and found this. He's not actually allowed on the bed (especially when he's so dirty), but I had to take a pic, too cute.

What have you enjoyed about this week? Happy Friday!

I LOVE my new Wellies!

Ok, so this is a kind of silly post but the general theme of my blog is to celebrate the small things that make us smile, and well - my new wellies do just that!

This weekend has been spent re-decorating and cleaning after the my shower leak issues, but I did manage to squeeze in a little trip to the coast and as the current sea temperature in the UK is somewhere around zero (I don't know this for sure, but you wouldn't catch me getting in anytime before July), I took my wellies for a paddle!

I used to have Hunter ones, navy blue (will be selling them on ebay this week!), but I love these Joules ones as they're a bit different, super comfy and still really high quality.

Product Review: No7 Extravagant Volume Mascara

As I have been asked not once, but twice this weekend whether my eyelashes were real I though it only right to mention my new favourite mascara!

This product is quite simply AMAZING! I've never used a No7 mascara before having preferred to pay a little extra for brands like Clinique or Benenfit, but have just been so pleased with this little gem!

It really does do what it's supposed to. You get super glam, voluminous lashes with one quick swish of mascara. I didn't even curl my lashes or apply a second coat. Perfectly happy with the effect after one coat for a night out.

This retails in Boots for £12.95 and is worth every penny! It's currently part of 3 for 2 mix and match for loads of products across store so you could pick it up as a bargain.

Happy lashes!

Recipe Review: Jamie Oliver, Super Tasty Spanish Roast Chicken

Happy Easter! I thought I'd take this opportunity to premier a new feature for my blog, a recipe review.

Those that know me well know that I love to cook! Something about it just totally de-stresses me and gives me the opportunity to get in the kitchen and create something yummy!

First up, a man we all know very well if you've ever been near a TV or bookshop, Mr Jamie Oliver. I love his style of cooking, no fuss, just clean flavours combined to give the dish a touch of genius, and have you always wanting more! It being Easter weekend and all, I thought a roast might be a perfect place to start. I can't eat lamb, they are just simply TOO cute, so I went with chicken, Super Tasty Spanish Roast Chicken to be precise.

Here's the link to the recipe:

http://www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/chicken-recipes/super-tasty-spanish-roast-chicken

And here are my thoughts:

Ingredients

These are all easy to come by and not too pricey, although I always go for Free Range/Organic chicken so this adds a couple of ££.

Method

You start by par-boiling your potatoes and preparing the chicken for the oven.

So far, so good. I've never really done the greaseproof paper, wet and scrunch thing before so was interested to see the difference it makes.

Popped the chicken in the oven and made my gremolata.

And then, the disaster happened! Two problems:

1. My chorizo was cooking way too quickly.
2. The greaseproof paper was burning around the edges and sort of "flaking" on to the chicken and potatoes. Mmmm, not so great.

In the end, I had to majorly reduce my oven temp to ensure the chicken was cooked but throw-away my chorizo, boo! I guess it had given up it's flavour as part of the dish, but not actually getting to eat it wasn't great.

Here's the finished plate of food:

It looks pretty boring, having the chorizo on there would have definitely added an extra dimension both visually and for extra flavour.

Conclusion?

This was a bit of a let-down! Which makes me sad as anything by Jamie Oliver is usually an absolute winner. Next time, I would introduce the chorizo later in the cooking process and also maybe scrap the greaseproof paper, I still don't really understand the point.

The chicken was really tasty and tender and the potatoes had a nice, smoky flavour. So marks out of 10? This time a 6.
